Herndon UMC is recognized as a "Welcoming Congregation"

As part of the national United Methodist campaign, Igniting Ministry, our church has received recognition as a 2002 Welcoming Congregation. HUMC began active participation in this program in the spring and has worked hard to open "our hearts, our minds and our doors."

In order to receive this recognition a church must complete an annual checklist of activities. Included are our use of greeters and welcoming hospitality, our excellent New Member classes and appropriate use of advertising on our street sign. Our re-designed and well maintained web site and our Welcome Folders as well as our monthly advertising in the Observer and our participation in September Open House Month were all included in this checklist. A church must verify 100 points to qualify, when we submitted our paperwork in October we had over 200 points. Each year we must complete and submit our paperwork; our goal is to receive annual recognition.

HUMC is the first church in the Arlington district to receive this recognition. Receipt of this award does not complete our work; it is truly just beginning. Each Ministry area is urged to make all programming welcoming with our ultimate goal being to bring disciples to Jesus Christ. As we look to the future bright with promise we take pride in this accomplishment and ask where God will lead us next.
