The Virginia annual conference of the UMC (VAUMC) has developed instructions for churches to return to in-person worship that are based on three stages. The stages set up by the Annual Conference are meant to reflect some of the standards our state government has in their phased approach. One of the conference recommendations is that churches establish a Healthy Church Team.

Herndon UMC’s Healthy Church Team is recommending that we not gather for any in-person gatherings at the church, indoors or outdoors, until we have received guidance that we can move into stage three, and not before August 30, 2020. This recommendation is motivated primarily by prayerful discernment and a desire to keep the people of Herndon UMC as safe as possible. It is based around current requirements from the VAUMC and guidelines from other sources. This window gives us the time to collect the appropriate tools and develop the appropriate plans for gathering together safely.  Of course, all recommendations, steps for implementation, and timelines are subject to change in correspondence with any shifts in guidelines.

When able to hold in person worship, Herndon UMC offers three distinct experiences.  There is a casual, more traditional worship on Saturday evenings at 5:30 pm in the Sanctuary.  There is a more traditional worship experience on Sunday mornings at 9 am in the Sanctuary; and a more modern experience at 10:30 am in our Fellowship Hall. A professionally staffed nursery is available for kids three and under during all worship services, and KIDS CLUB is available to those age 3 to grade 6 during the Sunday services.

During the summer (about mid-June to mid-August), Herndon UMC combines the two Sunday services and incorporates elements of both more modern and more traditional worship.  This combined Sunday service is held at 10 am and is similar to what is being offered through our Worship from Home opportunities.
