Caring for Refugees

Jun 2, 2022 | Opportunities to Serve

We help feed Afghan refugees on the first Monday of every month.

In the Fall of 2021, Herndon UMC joined forces with Sterling UMC, Centreville UMC, Floris UMC, and Galilee UMC to help West Fairfax Christian Ministries and Lutheran Social Services provide care for refugees in the process of resettling from Afghanistan.  We provide a box of groceries (for the week) for individuals and families each month.  You may help support these individuals and families by giving of your time, donating food, or providing funds for food to be given to them.  We will continue to support these refugees with monthly food as long as necessary and with other support as identifed.

With the recent events in Ukraine, we also want to offer assistance to Ukranian refugees here and abroad.  We are currently accepting financial donations.  We intend to support the following and your gifts can add to our donations:

Sign ups for food donations or for food prep and delivery needs at bit.ly/HerndonUMCNeeds. Financial donations may be made to Herndon UMC at bit.ly/HelpFromHerndon.  If you do not want to sign up online, look for the clipboard hung on the Connection Corner and print your name and email next to the item(s) that you would like to sign up for and we will add you to the list.  Financial donations may also be made through any of the the usual donation methods — on the app, by check, or online (PayPal or Pushpay).  Just please be sure to indicate the amount designated for the Refugees.

The mission of Herndon UMC is to serve and share God’s Love in community.

The vision of Herndon UMC is to live the teachings of Jesus so that everyone may know God’s Love and grow in Spirit-filled relationships.
