Share the Light — Discovering the Promise of Advent in Songs of the Season

Nov 17, 2020 | Uncategorized

Special Events

Herndon UMC has some wonderful traditions each year.  The Angel Tree happened earlier in October and November this year.   Just before Advent begins, you may receive a phone call from a volunteer about delivering a package.  Herndon UMC volunteers will be delivering materials to help church family share the light of Christ with your family and your neighbors this season.  If you do not receive an Advent Delivery, but would like to be included, please contact admin@herndonumc.org.

Make a Family Advent Wreath

The Family Advent Celebration is another wonderful Herndon UMC tradition where families get together and build Advent wreaths for their homes.  Supplies are provided by Herndon UMC and greens come from the homes of members.  This year Herndon UMC is delivering the materials to you in Share-the-Light bags.

Instructions on how to make your own Advent wreath are included in the bag and are linked here.

Also included are a set of devotions to help you celebrate Advent with your wreath.  Download a copy of the Advent Devotional.

Children's Christmas Pageant

HUMC KIDS are working on putting together a digital Christmas pageant this year.  It will be included as part of the Children’s Digital Christmas Eve service at 3 pm on Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve Luminaries

If you have attended Christmas Eve worship at Herndon UMC in the past, you likely remember the luminaries put together and spread around Herndon UMC by the youth.  This year, as you worship from wherever you are, you are invited to share the light of Christ with your neighbors.

Your Advent Delivery contains five luminary bags and votive candles.  Place stickers on the bags and deliver four of them to neighbors while inviting them to light them on their porches at sunset on Christmas Eve.  Please also invite them to join in singing “Silent Night” outside (from their front porch) at 8 pm on Christmas Eve.  There is more information about the “Silent Night” Sing-Along below.

12 Days of Christmas

Continue your Christmas celebration with 12 days of music brought to you by Herndon UMC’s Music Ministries. Each day from December 25 to January 5 check the Herndon UMC Community Facebook Group for a Christmas, musical video offering from a community member. The group is public, but you do need to join it to see the posts. Enjoy!

Christmas Eve

There in the lowly manger, in the still of the night, came Jesus. Not born with fanfare and a selfie, but to humble parents in a humble setting. Out of the stillness came the sound of a Messiah. Out of chaos came order. Out of nothing came life. In 2020 we have experienced so much that feels like waiting, that feels like chaos, that may even feel like darkness. But on this night, even in the silence, we discover that we are not alone. God is with us. Thanks be to God.

Scripture: Luke 2:1-7 CEB

Need a track to follow?  Here is a nice one on YouTube with lyrics on the screen and with piano accompaniment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26Tq7VOyhAo.  If it is a little fast, you can change the playback speed in YouTube to go slower, just click on the settings icon (i.e. gear) in the lower right corner of the video.

Know that other members of your church family are singing with you.  (Youth are invited to join in a special youth Zoom to share the moment.  Contact Sheri, sheri@herndonumc.org, for details.)

Share the Light — Call to Action

The Angel Tree came early this year, but the Herndon UMC church family responded generously and provided about 200 gift cards to help local families celebrate Christmas this year.

You are also invited to share the light of Christ with some of your neighbors. Share the Light bags contained five luminaries.  You are invited to keep one to light and place outside your home on Christmas Eve, and there are four more to share with neighbors.  There are stickers in the bag to put on the bottom of the luminaries to help your neighbors understand what to do.  Invite them to share in celebrating the light of Christ on Christmas Eve both by placing the luminary outside their home and by joining you, and the Herndon UMC church family, in singing Silent Night from their doorstep, garage, or covered porch at 8 pm.

Let’s share the Light of Christ near and far this season!

The mission of Herndon UMC is to serve and share God’s Love in community.

The vision of Herndon UMC is to live the teachings of Jesus so that everyone may know God’s Love and grow in Spirit-filled relationships.
