September 11 | Open – Living the 701 Life (Week 4): Open Our Hands

Sep 7, 2022 | Worship

You are invited into this worship experience for the week of Sunday, September 11.

In 2019, as a part of the Herndon UMC strategic planning process, a group of leaders came together to write something that has become known as the “701 Prayer”. This prayer has been used for three years as a way to start meetings, to remind ourselves of the role we play in community, and to be intentional in our prayers for God to open us to whatever God may have for us as a church family. In this sermon series, we’ll explore the different prayers that are embedded within this important prayer. As we do so, we will be praying to discover the kind of openness God might be encouraging within us for whatever God might be doing in and through Herndon UMC.

From: Luke 6:27-38

Open our hands to grow in service. When we consider what it looks like to grow in service, the hand is an excellent metaphor. Operating in this life with a “clenched fist” mentality means we can keep a tight grip and sense of control over ourselves and others. But it also means we miss out on the blessings that can come with being able to hold our hands open to ourselves and others. Perhaps in this Gospel text, there is an invitation to learn to hold our hands as if we were holding a bird. Securely enough so that there can be a place of safety, but openly enough that our dreams can fly.

We are called to serve and love people, even those we might disagree with, not as a work of control, but as the gift of grace.

No matter where you worship from, you are encouraged to add your voice to prayers and songs and stand as you are able.  There is a Bulletin to help you experience worship.  It includes links and information to help you be connected at Herndon UMC along with the order of worship.

There are three opportunities to worship on Sunday, starting with an 8am service outdoors (through October 2), 10am worship, this week in Doe Fellowship Hall, and 5pm worship in the sanctuary. The 8am worship is weather permitting. The 10am worship is livestreamed on YouTube.com/herndonumc. Nursery is available for newborn to 3 years at the 10am and 5pm services. Kids Club for ages 3 – 6th grade takes place at 10am during worship.

Nursery care is available for infants and young children during the 10am and 5pm Sunday worship services.  If you have questions about the Nursery, contact mallory@herndonumc.org.

As always, we want to stay connected and are a community of prayer.  Glory sightings and prayer concerns may be shared by text, in the chat, through this online form, or at any time by email to prayerchain@herndonumc.org.
