November 28 – Beyond the Christmas Card (Week 1): Setting the Picture

Nov 23, 2021 | Worship

You are invited into this worship experience for the week of Sunday, November 28.

In the month of December, mailboxes begin to fill with cards and letters that are filled with pictures and stories of what people and families have been up to in the year that has passed. These mementos look wonderful and often fill us with a sense of warmth and gratitude for the connections that span time and distance. But goodness knows the images and stories we see and hear are incomplete. What would it look like, this Advent, to glimpse behind the camera and the pen to see the stories of some of the characters of the Christmas story and to discover how God might be working through them, even in their imperfection? This Advent, we’ll follow the lectionary in the gospel of Luke as we look behind the scenes to discover a God who lives and loves even in the broken places.

This week: ‘Setting the Picture’ At the outset of this series, we’ll hear the prophecy of what is to come. In many senses, these texts are about setting the expectations of what will soon take place. For many of us, the season of Advent that approaches Christmas is filled with management of expectations. There are so many parties to go to, gifts to purchase, and people to satisfy. It can be exhausting! How might we position ourselves to have reasonable expectations of others and ourselves in this season of Advent, believing that with God anything is possible?

The image of a coming Messiah is presented as a kind of triumphal glory, but in reality will be a humble coming-with. In the midst of our feelings of “not enough”, how can we see our lacking as more than enough?

No matter where you worship from, you are encouraged to add your voice to prayers and songs and stand as you are able.  There is a Bulletin to help you experience worship.  It includes links and information to help you be connected at Herndon UMC along with the order of worship for all three services.

There are three opportunities to worship each Sunday: traditional worship in the Sanctuary at 9:30am, our modern, unplugged worship at 11:00am in the Fellowship Hall, and Relaxed Traditional, a traditional, casual worship in the sanctuary at 5:00pm. The 9:30 worship is livestreamed on YouTube and herndonumc.org.

Nursery care is available for infants and young children during the Sunday worship services.  If you have questions about the Nursery, contact mallory@herndonumc.org.

As always, we want to stay connected and are a community of prayer.  Glory sightings and prayer concerns may be shared by text, in the chat, through this online form, or at any time by email to prayerchain@herndonumc.org.
