December 12 – Beyond the Christmas Card – An Advent of Good Enough (Week 3): The Crowd

Dec 9, 2021 | Worship

You are invited into this worship experience for the week of Sunday,
December 12.

The stories of our Christmas cards are often ones that tell the best stories, have the greatest hype. But what happens when your hype comes from a guy who is way out there? When you recognize the return address and think “oh, that guy”? One of the gifts of Advent is learning to lean into the people who don’t seem like the best source for information or good news, because it is through these outcast-type people that good news does come. Jesus is on the way, we are called to be prepared.

In this week’s story, the masses come with humble questions: “What should we do?” As the story of Jesus progresses, it is these same crowds that will reject Jesus, call for his death, and sacrifice the truth for what is most popular. How often do we fall trap to asking the masses “What should we do?” when we know the answer they give won’t be the answer they will honor? This week will be an invitation to see past the noise in order to discover the truth.

The masses offer momentary pleasure or satisfaction, but are not the source of the long-term hope that we need.

No matter where you worship from, you are encouraged to add your voice to prayers and songs and stand as you are able.  There is a Bulletin to help you experience worship.  It includes links and information to help you be connected at Herndon UMC along with the order of worship for all three services.

There are three opportunities to worship each Sunday: traditional worship in the Sanctuary at 9:30am, our modern, unplugged worship at 11:00am in the Fellowship Hall, and Relaxed Traditional, a traditional, casual worship in the sanctuary at 5:00pm. The 9:30 worship is livestreamed on YouTube and herndonumc.org.

Nursery care is available for infants and young children during the Sunday worship services.  If you have questions about the Nursery, contact mallory@herndonumc.org.

As always, we want to stay connected and are a community of prayer.  Glory sightings and prayer concerns may be shared by text, in the chat, through this online form, or at any time by email to prayerchain@herndonumc.org.

If you are new or looking to get more connected or learn more about Herndon UMC, please email welcome@herndonumc.org or complete this online form.  You are welcome here and we would love to grow in a Spirit-filled relationship with you.
