Upward Basketball 2022

Nov 16, 2021 | Featured, HUMC KIDS, Opportunities to Serve

It was exciting to welcome 140 kids and their families to Herndon UMC in early December for Upward Evaluations! The energy was palpable and we are excited for the season coming up!

The league is currently at capacity, but there is a waitlist for those who would like to be contacted if space becomes available.

January UPDATE:

The well-being and safety of our players and families, coaches, referees, and volunteers, is our highest priority and concern. We believe this is part of our call as Christians to care for our neighbors and their well-being, as well as being mindful and aware of the numerous ways that COVID-19 continues to impact our lives and our Upward program. What this means for us is that based on the data for the Center of Disease Control (CDC) for our area, and in conversation with the Upward leadership and Herndon UMC’s church leadership, we will be delaying the first week of practices to the week of January 31, and will adjust our game schedule accordingly. We are hopeful that a brief delay will allow for a plateauing of the current surge of COVID cases in our community coming out of Christmas and New Years.

With this delay, we are also going to hold on releasing team assignments and practice schedules so that those can be adapted if necessary in the coming days to reflect the best and safest experience possible for players and coaches.

Caring for Kids

About COVID protocols/mitigation efforts for this season:

Hand sanitizer stations are available throughout the building, and we are currently asking folks to wear masks in the building, regardless of vaccination status. We are in conversation with Herndon UMC leadership to determine the specific COVID protocols for Upward this season in order to help keep everyone in our league safe and healthy. Check back for more information here as protocols are set.

About concussions:

Concern about concussions and sports-related head injuries have grown over the last few years, and Herndon UMC asks all parents/legal guardians of players and coaches to complete a brief online training offered by the Center for Disease Control related to concussions. You can access this training using this link: https://www.cdc.gov/headsup/youthsports/training/index.html and under the “Launch the Training” select “For Parents: Click Here to Launch Course” option.

December 6-7 | Player Evaluations

5:30-8:30 PM on Monday & Tuesday
in Doe Fellowship Hall
(701 Bennett Street)

You and your child/ren will need to attend only one of these days, and you can stop in anytime between 5:30 and 8:30 PM. Evaluations will take about 10-15 minutes and will include confirming registration information; your child/ren doing a few skills assessments with one of our coaches; and taking care of any last minute things before the season begins in January.

Unlike a school team or another sports league, where you traditionally try out to see if you make it onto the team, Upward accepts everyone who registers to play on a team! Evaluations help us measure and assess what each child’s skill set and better build level teams for the season. All we ask in evaluations is for our players to come ready to have fun and do their best!

mid-December to mid-January | Team Set Up

Teams will be created and coaches will contact team members with follow up information about practice schedules, etc.

February 3, 5:30-7:30 pm | Meet The Coach Night

Drop by Herndon UMC’s Doe Fellowship Hall for this is open house style event where you can come and meet your coaches, pick up your player box and uniforms, and take care of other registration matters before the season begins. If you’re not able to attend, no worries! We will have your player box ready for you on your first night of practice.

Week of February 7 | Practices Begin

Your once a week practices begin on January 31 and will be held at Herndon UMC.  Practice times will be arranged around team member and coach preferences along with when other teams of your child/ren’s level will practice.
